History
The province of Arezzo was formally born in 1859 from the 42 municipalities coming from the Aretinian countryside of Grand Duke of Tuscany.
This countryside was formed in the thirteenth century after a long period of struggles that brought the free city of Arezzo to constitute a vast domain over the surrounding territory and against the feudal lords. Arezzo reached its maximum expansion under the lordship of Bishop Guido Tarlati, but after his death it was increasingly difficult for the city to maintain its territorial conquests, and in 1384 was conquered by Florence.
The populations aretine gave a generous contribution to the fight for Liberation: it was bloody and cost the lives of more than 1400 partisans as well as many civilian victims of massacres occurred in the entire province.
