The Province of Massa-Carrara

The Province of Massa Carrara is the northern of Tuscany region. Bordered to the west with the Ligurian Sea and Liguria region (Province of La Spezia), to the north with the Emilia-Romagna (Province of Parma and Province of Reggio Emilia), east with the Province of Lucca.
The province is predominantly mountainous and hilly, except a short stretch of coast 14 km long.

The province can be divided into two areas:

     * Costa or Riviera Apuana
     * Lunigiana

The coastal area, with its long and clear beaches formed by fine grains of gravels, includes the municipalities of Massa, Carrara and Montignoso. In addition, a characteristic feature of the province are the Apuan Alps, mountains reaching a height of up to 1945m, and from which they extract the famous Carrara marble.

The continental part of the territory is called the Lunigiana (this area borders the Liguria and Tuscany) a valley where the river  Magra flows.
